What Is a Shrink Sleeve Label?

Shrink sleeve labels are made from a variety of plastic materials and are applied around a product container to display branding, product information, and traceability details. Once the sleeve is placed around the container, heat is applied to shrink the material, so it conforms tightly to the shape of the product.

How Do Shrink Sleeve Labels Work?

Implementing shrink sleeves on a production line involves a three-step process — from printing the artwork to applying and shrinking the sleeve onto the container.

  1. 1. Printing & Preparation
  2. The label artwork is printed onto a continuous roll of plastic film, typically made from PET, PETG, PVC, or OPS materials. The printed film is then folded and sealed into a continuous tube shape.

2. Application

    • Next, automated shrink sleeve applicators cut the film into individual sleeves and place one onto each product container. At this stage, the sleeve fits loosely around the product.

    3. The Shrink Tunnel

    • Lastly, after the sleeve is applied, the product travels through a shrink tunnel via conveyor. Heat is then applied, causing the sleeve to contour perfectly to the container shape. Shrink tunnels can utilize steam, electric heat, or radiant heat depending on the application requirements.

    Benefits of Shrink Sleeve Labels

Shrink sleeve labels provide 360-degree branding opportunities, ranging from full-body container coverage to partial or mid-body coverage. Their vibrant colors and high-quality graphics help products stand out on crowded retail shelves and enhance overall shelf appeal.

Shrink sleeves also conform to a wide range of unique and complex container shapes, making them ideal for many industries. In addition, they can provide tamper-evident security bands that help ensure product safety for consumers.

    Industries That Use Shrink Sleeves

Because shrink sleeves are highly versatile, they are widely used across numerous industries for branding, product information, traceability, and product security. Shrink sleeve labeling and tamper-evident packaging solutions are ideal for:

    • Food
    • Beverage
    • Pharmaceutical
    • Personal care
    • Household products
    • Nutraceuticals
    • And more

What Are the Different Types of Films Used?

At AFM, the most recommended shrink sleeve materials are PETG, PET, and PVC, while OPS and PLA are used in select applications. Each material offers unique advantages depending on the container shape, application requirements, sustainability goals, and budget.

    1. PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) Shrink Sleeves

PETG film is best for premium packaging solutions, high-performance applications, and high-clarity labels. PETG is often viewed as a premium alternative to PET and PVC due to its superior shrink performance and visual appearance. It is ideal for premium beverages, personal care products, nutraceuticals, and brands with proper recycling stream management.

      2. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Shrink Sleeves

PET film is best for simple container shapes, durability, and food-safe packaging. PET performs well for scratch-resistance and food-safe packaging applications and is ideal for tamper-evident bands.

        • 3. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Shrink Sleeves

PVC is best for cost-effective packaging and simple container shapes and remains one of the most commonly used shrink sleeve materials in the packaging industry. PVC is ideal for beverage bottles, household products, and high-volume consumer goods where cost efficiency is critical.

What About OPS & PLA Films?

OPS (Oriented Polystyrene) Shrink Sleeves & PLA (Polylactic Acid) shrink sleeves

OPS shrink sleeves offer a balance of visual appeal and sustainability benefits, but they are expensive, while PLA shrink sleeves offer a sustainability-focused alternative, but they can create several practical challenges for manufacturers.

        Common Uses

While shrink sleeves are a cost-effective way to label products year-round, some manufacturers find them beneficial for limited edition runs, seasonal designs, unique, promotional designs as well as tamper-evident security.

        Wrapping Up

Shrink sleeve labels combine functionality, durability, and standout branding in a way that few packaging solutions can match. As brands compete for consumer attention, shrink sleeves continue to grow in popularity across industries.
